A hack is a modified ROM image, usually created off of a game that currently has an editor. For example, Lunar Magic is the preferred editor for Super Mario World. With the proper tools, extensive alterations of ROMs can be created. Original game content can be edited, replaced, and removed during the creation of a hack.
The term hack can also be applied to individual internal modifications, especially in regards to ASM hacks.
