Mode 4 is the only background mode that supports both Offset Change Mode and Direct Color. The horizontal resolution is 256 dots.
Mode 4 is the only background mode where the most significant bit of the offset change mode register is effective.[2]
Tiles may be 8 by 8 pixels or 16 by 16 pixels in Mode 4.[3]
Bust-A-Move uses Mode 4 for gameplay.[1]
Mosaic, interlacing and windowing are supported.
